South African Post Office or SAPO is the national postal service of South Africa and is owned by the South African government. It employs over 17,000 people and operates more than 2,400 postal outlets throughout the country.
The SA government requires the Post Office to roll out 100 Post Office outlets every year in order to provide a -universal- service in South Africa. Today the Post Office-s huge infrastructure is its main business advantage. This makes it possible to extend service beyond mail. A good example is MTN-s share expansion offer. South Africans can apply for these shares at any post office in the country. This means someone in a deep rural area competes on an equal footing to those in big cities.
This same reach is also used to deliver government services, ranging from old-age pensions to land claim payments, medicine to clinics and salary slips to teachers in rural areas.
